A citation is any place online that mentions your business's name, address, and phone — whether or not it links to your site. Think Yelp, Apple Maps, Yellow Pages, Chamber of Commerce, and industry directories.

Citations are to local SEO what backlinks are to regular SEO: each consistent mention is a small vote that your business is legitimate and located where you say it is.

Two kinds

  • Structured — a formal directory listing with dedicated NAP fields.
  • Unstructured — a mention in a blog post, news article, or roundup.

The goal isn't sheer volume — it's consistency. Contradictory citations confuse Google and can hold you out of the map pack.
