Local Proximity
How close a searcher is to your business — a ranking factor you can't control but can work around.
Local proximity is simply how physically close the person searching is to your business. Since Google wants to show nearby options, proximity is one of the strongest factors in local pack rankings — which is why the same search gives different results a few blocks apart.
You can't move — so what can you do?
You can't relocate for every customer, but you can widen your effective reach:
- Location and neighborhood pages — dedicated pages targeting each area you serve.
- Service-area settings — configured properly in your Google Business Profile.
- Reviews that mention locations — customers naming nearby towns reinforce your relevance there.
Measuring proximity ranking across a grid of points around your business — a "geo-grid" scan — is how you see where you're strong and where a competitor owns the map.
