Meta Description

The gray summary line under your Google result. It doesn't rank you — it earns the click.

A meta description is a short HTML summary — around 150–160 characters — that search engines usually show beneath your title tag in the results.

Here's the surprise: it is not a direct ranking factor. Google doesn't rank you higher for a better description. What it does is win the click — and click-through rate influences rankings indirectly.

What a good one does

  • Restates the searcher's goal so they know they're in the right place.
  • Names a benefit or a differentiator.
  • Includes a light call to action ("See pricing," "Book today").

Leave it blank and Google will grab a random sentence from your page — rarely the one you'd have chosen.

Want to never think about this again?

HeyLang handles meta description — and the rest of your marketing — without ever bringing it up. This very definition was written by it.
